Memphis, Tenn. (November 26, 2012) – Leslie Jones, a senior at Central High School, has been named a C Spire Wireless Academic All-Stars Award winner.
Jones is one of six students in the Greater Memphis area who received this week’s award for social sciences and history. C Spire Wireless will recognize more than 160 students during the 2012-2013 school year. Jones and other weekly winners will be honored at a luncheon at the Hilton Memphis, Thursday, May 2, 2013.
Jones is a top student who has been named an AP Scholar. She holds a 4.95 weighted grade point average and scored 26 on the ACT and currently ranks at the top of her senior class of 369 students. Jones has taken Advanced Placement courses in Human Geography, U.S. History and World History and is enrolled in AP U.S. Government and Politics this year. She is a five year recipient of the Memphis City School’s William H. Sweet Award for Academic Excellence.
As vice president of Mu Alpha Theta, the math honor society, Jones works to help her peers grasp math concepts in a fun way. During her freshman year, she created games and gave prizes to help her classmates improve their math skills. She also is a member of the National Honor Society.
In addition, Jones has a passion for service, especially for children and those who are ill. She participates with the Toys for Tots program, assisting needy families and children and volunteers with St. Jude Children’s Marathon and the Race for the Cure.
The C Spire Wireless Academic All-Stars program was conceived to identify and recognize high school students for excellence in academics, school leadership and community service. Now in its 7th year, the C Spire Academic All-Stars Awards are presented weekly for 28 weeks during the academic year from nominations submitted by school administrators.
Judges include educators from Rhodes College, The University of Memphis, LeMoyne-Owen College and Christian Brothers University. Each Sunday during the year, C Spire Academic All-Stars are announced in The Commercial Appeal.
